Missed waste collections

Missed general waste collections

Common reasons your general waste might not be collected include:

  • presentation of excess waste – we only collect one refuse bin or up to 3 refuse bags per property (if you live in the black-sacks collection area)
  • waste not presented by 7.00am – collection crews start their rounds at this time, you should make sure your container or securely tied bags are presented at your presentation point by this time
  • the bin lid not fully closed – we cannot collect overfilled, “crocodile bins” for safety reasons. The lid needs to be closed so the crew can see the bin securely attach to the lifting mechanism on the wagon
  • bin or bags were too heavy to safely handle
  • something might be stuck inside your bin – if waste is stuck in the bin, crews will do their best to shake the waste loose but if the waste does not empty, you'll need to loosen the contents before next scheduled collection
  • damaged bin – make sure the bin is in good condition before presenting it for collection. See how we deal with replacement waste containers

Not suitable items presented for disposal in your general waste, for example:

  • asbestos
  • batteries
  • bricks
  • chemicals
  • DIY waste
  • electrical items for example, vapes
  • gas cylinders
  • plasterboard
  • rubble
  • soil
  • turf
  • commercial waste

These items must be taken to Hazel Court HWRC or Towthorpe/Strensall HWRC for safe disposal.

Our A to Z recycling guide has information on how to dispose of other items not suitable for your general waste bin.

Reporting missed general waste collections

We’re sorry, but we cannot return to pick up individual bins or bags (if you live in bagged waste collection area) unless you’r in receipt of assisted or a medical waste collection. Your bin will be emptied at your next scheduled collection.

If you believe your collection was missed by the crew through no fault of your own, and your bin is full, contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team. Our contact centre team will be able to see if the crew recorded an issue with the waste you presented.

If there was no issue recorded, you'll be authorised to putout additional waste in securely tied bin bags, next to your container, equivalent to your usual bin size, on your next scheduled collection. For example, a 180 litre bin usually holds 3 bin bags of 60 litre each.

If you live in a black-sack collection area, you can put out up to 3 additional securely tied black bin bags.

See details of how to report missed assisted or medical waste collections, if you're registered for this service.
