Missed waste collections

Missed assisted or medical waste collections

Common reasons your assisted waste or medical waste might not be collected include:

  • containers not at the agreed location (if you're receiving assisted waste collections) – ensure that your waste containers are always stored at the same location agreed at the time of requesting the assisted service; contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team if your location have changed
  • presentation of excess waste – we'll only empty one refuse bin and up to 3 bags of waste. We will not remove side waste presented next to your bin; contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team if you struggle with the amount of waste you produce due to medical needs
  • bin, boxes or bags were too heavy to safely handle – you may need to remove some of the waste before we can collect it. We cannot collect overfilled bins for safety reasons
  • presentation of 'unsuitable items' – for example, bricks, rubble, plasterboard; refer to our A to Z recycling guide for information on how to dispose of these items
  • recycling boxes were contaminated – for example, dirty items soiled with food waste, plastic mixed with paper or cardboard. You'll need to remove these items before your next collection
  • no garden waste subscription – if there is no sticker attached to your garden waste bin and our crews could not verify you hold a valid subscription at your address using their in-cab technology, your garden waste will not be emptied

Reporting missed assisted and medical waste collections

If you presented your waste correctly but it was missed you can contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team to report your missed collection:

  • after 4.00pm on your collection day
  • within 5 working days of your collection day

Once we've logged your missed collection, we'll return at the earliest opportunity, this could be as early as the next day, including Saturday.

If our crews reported issues with your waste, we would not return for it. You can take your waste for free to Hazel Court HWRC or Towthorpe and Strensall HWRC.
