Missed waste collections

Missed garden waste collections

Common reasons your garden waste bin might not be collected include:

  • no valid sticker visible on your bin – garden waste is a subscription only service. If your bin does not have a sticker displayed as you have not subscribed to the service, you'll need to sign-up for the Garden Waste Subscription Scheme before collections can take place. If you've signed up for the service and are awaiting delivery of a sticker, contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team. We'll return for bins that have been paid for
  • overfilled bin – the bin was too full, the lid was not closed completely, or extra garden waste was left next to the bin. You may wish to consider purchasing an additional subscription for an extra bin if you struggle with capacity
  • incorrect materials – the bin contained items that are not allowed to be presented (read our what you can put in your garden waste bin page)
  • weight – the bin was too heavy, making it unsafe for collection crews to move, for example, if it contained large amounts of soil or turf. You'll need to take some of the load out before your next collection
  • wrong size – we cannot collect large size 360 litre bins due to safety concerns. City of York Council only provides 180 litre bins for the collection of garden waste; contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team to order a smaller size replacement
  • damaged bin – make sure the bin is in good condition before presenting it for collection. See how we deal with replacement waste containers

Reporting missed garden waste collections

If you presented your garden waste correctly but it was missed you can contact the Waste, Highways and Environmental Services Team to report your missed paid for garden bins:

  • after 4.00pm on your collection day
  • within 1 working day of your collection day

Once we've logged your missed collection, we'll return at the earliest opportunity, this could be as early as the next day, including Saturday.

If our crews reported issues with your garden waste, we would not return for it. You can take your garden waste for free to Hazel Court HWRC or Towthorpe and Strensall HWRC.

See details of how to report missed assisted waste collections, if you're registered for this service.
