York Station Gateway

Project updates

Work is ongoing around the station to deliver the new and improved gateway to the city. Keep up-to-date with the latest updates.

We're currently working on the detailed plans for the next phase of work to ensure traffic impacts are minimised whilst Queen Street Bridge is demolished and a new road is created.

22 April – New temporary road

Following the first closure, the new temporary road to divert traffic around Queen Street Bridge opened ahead of schedule this morning and is now in use.

This road will continue to be used as the project progresses. However, a second closure will take place from 8.00pm Friday 26 April until 6.00am Monday 29 April which will allow for the removal of Queen Street Bridge.

13 March 2024 - Gate closure

LNER has announced the gates at Lowther Terrace will temporarily be closed due to the increase in construction work around the York Station car park and to ensure the safety of all station users.

From Thursday 14 March the gates will no longer be in use until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience.

The current diversion is to use existing open routes, including Blossom Street, to access the station entrance.

7 March 2024 - Update from Sisk

As of 4 March, a one-way system for traffic is in place along Queen Street slip road, and barriers, signage and parking cones are in place.

This is essential for the next phase of work which will remove tarmac near to the bridge and prepare the ground for sections of the new road.

This work is likely to continue throughout March and into April.

Pedestrian access to the NCP car park, the York RI Sports Centre, and the houses on Queen Street slip road has not changed. The station side footpath on Queen Street bridge remains closed, with access on the city walls side footpath only.

Vehicle access will be through the current LNER Long Stay car park. There is a new exit point from the LNER Long Stay car park at the rear of the York RI Sports Centre building.

Sisk are working to minimise impact where possible by:

  • working within site hours 7.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday
  • instructing vehicles to switch off, rather than idling
  • reducing reversing to minimise reversing alarms
  • using dust suppression to minimise mess

19 February to 5 March 2024

There will be a footpath closure on the side of Queen Street bridge closest to the railway station.

The footpath on the side of Queen Street bridge closest to the city walls will be operational, with pedestrian crossings at the front of the station and at the Blossom Street intersection, to allow pedestrian access to the station at all times.

This work allows us to begin initial archaeological work early, so it doesn’t impact the removal of Queen Street Bridge

9 January 2024 - New year update

Throughout January, February and March, Sisk will be working within the existing site boundary with no planned road closures.

Work will take place to build part of the new temporary highway through the station long stay car park, which will facilitate the road diversion allowing the removal of Queen Street Bridge.

This work will include installing drainage, diverting utilities, and then ducting, paving and surfacing to create part of the new road.

Work to remove the footbridge to the York Railway Institute building was completed on Friday 24 November. The Queen Street slip road has now reopened.

This has been part of the preparation work which will enable the removal of Queen Street bridge.

5 September 2023 - Contractor appointed

City of York Council has appointed John Sisk and Son to deliver the transformative York Station Gateway project, following a successful, competitive procurement process.

John Sisk and Son has been awarded a contract for the £7.8 million highway works, including the removal of Queen Street bridge, realignment of Queen Street, creation of Station Square and improvements to the cycle and pedestrian routes.

Project partner LNER will go out to tender for the remaining station works phase of the project later this year.
