York Station Gateway

Plan ahead - getting to York City Centre

As part of works to transform the entrance to York Station, Queen Street (including the new temporary road), will be closed from 7.00pm on Saturday 24 May until 6.00am on Tuesday 27 May.

During these closures Queen Street will be closed to buses, cyclists and vehicles, from the taxi drop-off point in front of York Station to Station to the RI Gym / NCP car park access road. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

During the closure, work will take place to remove the existing road surfaces and re-lay them to form the new road layouts.

We know this is a significant route in the city so we're asking people to plan ahead and look at sustainable travel options.

York, the station and its neighbouring businesses are open for business. This includes the York RI, where the Festival of the Force event is being held on Saturday 25 May.

While there has been lots of work to minimise disruption during these closures, we're expecting the inner ring road to be very busy so we're asking people to plan ahead and consider other ways to travel to the city centre.

There are a number of ways you can get to the city centre:

Travel by train

Trains are running through York Station as normal. You can get off at York Station as usual and make your way to your destination. There will be diversion signs in place to assist you. If travelling to York Station allow extra time and plan ahead.

The nearby NCP car park will be open during these works. Access will be managed by marshals so please allow extra time.

Please note the Station Long Stay Car Park is now closed while work on a multi-story car park takes place.

Pedestrians

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the closure.

The pedestrian route will use the footpath on the station side of the road, which will allow pedestrian access from the station through to Micklegate. Access to the station from Leeman Road will also remain.

The gates at Lowther Terrace will be open during the closures to allow pedestrians and cyclists through.

Cyclists

Those travelling by bike will still be able to move around the city. The only diversions are around the front of the station when coming in from the Blossom Street end of Station Road. Find more information about getting to York Station and nearby properties.

The gates at Lowther Terrace will be open as normal.

Travel by bus

Buses will continue to operate but some routes will change around the station as a result of the road closure. This will include the temporary relocation of some bus stops so please plan ahead and allow extra time to travel.

There will also be free shuttle buses running between Blossom Street and the station during the closures. The fully accessible double decker shuttle buses will run regularly and will stop at a number of bus stops along the route.

Park and Ride

We're expecting the roads within the city centre to be very busy during the closures and are asking people travelling from outside the city and those who live on Park & Ride routes to use this service to get to the city centre. Please check the times for your closest Park & Ride. Find out more about Park and Ride services and the timetable.
