Planning and building

York Station Gateway

Plan ahead for phase 1 - Monday 1 June to Sunday 7 June

We're working to complete the highways works on York Station Gateway.

This will entail 4 weeks of significant works in and around the final station to resurface the road in line with the final layout and to link in the majority of the the cycle lanes.

See the following travel information, which is for week 1 of the works, which will take place during the nights from Monday 1 June until the morning of Friday 5 June.

The works include night time road closures from 8.00pm till 6.00am on:

  • Monday 1 June
  • Tuesday 2 June
  • Wednesday 3 June
  • Thursday 4 June
  • Friday 5 June - until 6.00am, no 8.00pm closure

Each morning Station Road will reopen, and works will be finished by 6.00am on Friday 5 June.

Additional works will mean access to Tea Room Square will be restricted to vehicles on 5, 6 and 7 June - reopening on the morning of Monday 8 June - to allow the Hardicrete (re-enforced surfacing material) to be installed and set.

Throughout this week the short stay car park will be closed, with alternative Blue Badge Parking will be available near the South Train Shed / York Railway Institute building.

What’s happening in phase 1

During phase 1 we will be carrying out works between 8.00pm and 6.00am from the Milner Hotel to the Station Portico. This will happen each night from Monday 1 June 2026 until work is finished by 6.00am on Friday 5 June 2026. This means that access to the Station Portico and Tea Room Square will be closed each night, reopening in the morning.

In addition to the carriageway works, to allow the Hardicrete installation there will be a closure of Tea Room Square on Friday 5 June, Saturday 6 June and Sunday 7 June, with Tea Room Square reopening on the morning of Monday 8 June.

On the night of Friday 5 June there will be a lane closure on Station Road from 8.00pm until 6.00am on Saturday 6 June, to facilitate the laying of Hardicrete in the bus bay at Tea Room Square. Traffic lights will be in place with vehicles able to travel in both directions.

Station Road will be open during this time. Due to the time it takes for the Hardicrete to cure, access to Tea Room Square for vehicles will be closed on these days, with alternative Blue Badge Parking arrangements in place near the South Train Shed / York Railway Institute building.

We know Station Road is a significant and well-used road in the city so want to share information to help people plan ahead and get around the city, whatever mode of transport they use.

While there has been lots of work to minimise disruption during these closures, we're expecting the inner ring road to be very busy so we're asking people to plan ahead and consider other ways to travel to the city centre.

York, the station and its neighbouring businesses are open for business.
