Planning and building

York Station Gateway

Plan ahead - getting to York Station and nearby properties

As part of works to transform the area around York Station, the existing station long stay car park has been closed by Network Rail.

This is to enable their contractor to build a new 630 space multi-storey car park.

While there has been a lot of work to minimise disruption during these works, we're expecting surrounding car parks to be very busy so we're asking people to plan ahead and consider other ways to travel to the city centre. York, the Railway Station and its neighbouring businesses are open for business.

Find out more information about York Station on the LNER website.

Trains

Trains are running through York Station as normal. You can get off at York Station as usual and make your way to your destination.

Pedestrians

The gates at Lowther Terrace will remain open throughout the car park closure and access will be maintained through the works to allow pedestrians and cyclists through.

Cyclists

Cyclists will be able to get to the station as usual, including via the gates at Lowther Terrace, and cycle parking is available at the usual locations in the station.

From 15 September, the four cycle hoops near the Milner Hotel will be removed. These will be relocated directly opposite to the other side of Station Road within 3 days and will be clearly sign posted. Alternative cycle parking is also available in the station.

Buses

Buses will continue to serve the station.

From 15 September, 4 bus stops on the Station side of Station Road will be relocated from the portico to the new bus stands next to the station.

Stops RA, RB, RC and RD move to a new permanent location. Bus stops on the city walls side of the road will remain as they are, and the new bus stops will be opposite these stops. This will create a better waiting environment for passengers and drivers, while making room for improved public spaces.

Buses will continue to serve and stop at the station going to places across the city but will use the new stops as illustrated below from 15 September.
