Afghanistan refugee support

We're currently working closely with other local authorities, the government and Migration Yorkshire to help find accommodation and support for refugee families fleeing civil war in Afghanistan.

Once we know these families’ specific needs, we'll work with our partners to provide all the necessary support, just as we've always done with new refugee arrivals.

As soon as we know these needs we'll also be able to let you know exactly what you can usefully donate to support the new arrivals.

At present, housing is the priority. If you are a private landlord or have accommodation, please let us know by emailing: refugeesupport@york.gov.uk.

The city of York welcomes refugees. We work with key partners to identify how to best provide support in our area.

Volunteer your time, goods or services via GOV.UK:

You can also make a donation or volunteer through a local organisation:

York City of Sanctuary

York is recognised as a City of Sanctuary York; we work with refugee families who need accommodation - we regularly need places where people can stay, sometimes just for short periods of time. If you're able to offer help, contact Paul Wordsworth, the City of Sanctuary York co-ordinator, email: co-ordinator@yorkcityofsanctuary.org.uk.

Our Housing Options Team can provide support and advice for those at risk of homelessness.

Global resettlement scheme

In 2015 the UK government committed to resettle 20,000 refugees by 2020 under the Global Resettlement Scheme, formerly the Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme.

If you're a private landlord who can help to accommodate refugees, consider letting your property to vulnerable families via the YorHome Incentive Scheme.
