We need to let our empty properties quickly to families who are waiting for a new home. Help us by making sure your home meets our Moving Out Standard. If we have to do this work, we will charge you. You may not be allowed to move until the property meets this standard.
Clear it
Clear all your belongings and rubbish from the property and garden. Check to make sure you've cleared everything:
- up in the loft
- in cupboards
- under the stairs
- in the shed
- in the garden.
If you don't want it, don't just leave it behind or we'll charge you for clearing it
Disposing of your rubbish
You can take rubbish and unwanted items, including fridges and freezers to one of the local household waste recycling centres. See www.york.gov.uk/waste-recycling for full details on waste and recycling services in York.
You can phone our Customer Contact Centre on 01904 551551 to arrange a bulky item collection of up to 10 items. There is a charge for this service.
You can also gift good items to charity. Find out where you can take many common household waste items for recycling or reuse.
Clean it
Have a good clean up, especially in the bathroom and kitchen which get the most wear and tear. Check to make sure you've cleared everything:
- kitchen units - inside and out
- around the cooker
- bath, sink and toilet
- sweep and mop floors
- clean sticky stuff off walls when you take posters down
- windows.
Leave your property clean, how you would like to find it, and you'll be helping another family be able to move into their new home as quickly as possible.
Repair it
Contact us so we can arrange to deal with repairs before you move out. Phone 01904 551550 option 4, option 1 to report a repair.
If you have broken or damaged something you will need to repair or replace it yourself. This includes:
- broken or cracked glass
- damage to doors
- kitchen units or drawers
- broken toilet seats
- holes left after taking down shelves or fittings.
You may not be allowed to move until repairs are fixed.
Remove it
Unauthorised Do It Yourself must be put back to its original condition. Authorised improvements can usually stay.
You may only leave things behind if we have agreed. This includes floor coverings, carpets, garden sheds and greenhouses.
Bring your bins in
Put your empty bin in the shed or in the house to stop it being stolen. Garden ponds must be emptied, filled with earth or hardcore (not rubbish), left level and safe.
