Urban tree planting
The council’s York Green Street initiative was established in 2023 with the aim of planting 4,000 new trees within York’s urban environment, in line with commitments made in the Council Plan 2023-2028.
By March 2025, the council planted over 5,000 trees, including the creation of two new biodiversity-rich ‘micro woodlands’ to mark the coronation of King Charles III.
The York Green Street initiative ended on 31 March 2025. All trees planted as part of the initiative were fully funded by external grants. The new trees will be managed in line with the council’s Arboricultural Policy for York
