We plan our street cleaning so that we can target our resources as effectively and efficiently as possible. This helps us identify the best approach to regular street cleaning across the city. In addition, we'll take action when you report problems with street cleanliness.
Our approach to street cleansing across the city is informed by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse.
We use the DEFRA grades of cleanliness to record levels of street cleanliness for litter and refuse:
- Grade A: No litter or refuse
- Grade B: Predominately free of litter and refuse apart from some small items
- Grade C: Widespread distribution of litter and/or refuse with minor accumulations
- Grade D: Heavily affected by litter and/or refuse with significant accumulations
Our cleaning schedules do not include city centre footstreets, which we clean 7 days a week, all year round, between 5.00am and 8.00pm.
