Thank you to York’s residents, visitors, businesses and bus operators for your patience while we repair the void on St Leonard’s Place.
Having completed an inspection, we have undertaken essential safety work and now need to carry out further repairs. From Tuesday 27 May, we'll be starting work on repairing the underground damage and road service, which will require a further lane closure. These works may take around 2 weeks and we'll share updates as the project progresses.
The works will mean St Leonard’s place will be closed to inbound traffic from Bootham Bar with diversions in place. Outbound traffic (from Museum Street to Bootham and Gillygate) will be able to use St Leonard’s place.
Pedestrian access along St Leonard’s Place in both directions is still open.
Cyclists will be able to use a diversion taking them under Bootham Bar, along High Petergate, right on to Duncombe Place and then continue from there.
For drivers coming into the city centre along Bootham, diversions will be in place.
York, the Theatre Royal and its neighbouring businesses are open as usual.
While we're doing all we can to minimise disruption during these emergency works, we're expecting the inner ring road to be very busy so we're asking people to plan ahead and consider other ways to travel to the city centre.

Pedestrians
Pedestrian access will be maintained along St Leonard’s Place throughout the works.
Cyclists
Cyclists will be able to use a diversion (which will be signed) under Bootham Bar, along High Petergate and right on to Duncombe Place.
Alternatively, cyclists can dismount and walk their bike along the pavements on St Leonard’s Place.
Those travelling outbound from Museum Street towards Bootham and Gillygate will be able to travel down St Leonard’s Place.
Travel by bus
Buses will continue to operate but some routes will be diverted as a result of the road closure. This will include the temporary relocation of some bus stops so plan ahead and allow extra time to travel.
Below is a list of bus stops in the city, some of which are affected by the upcoming works:
Buses 1, 5 and 5A
Acomb-bound buses will divert from Clarence Street via Lord Mayor’s Walk, Monkgate, Foss Bank, Stonebow, Coppergate, Low Ousegate and Rougier Street, then resuming the normal route at Station Road.
Strensall and Haxby-bound buses will divert via Rougier St, Low Ousegate, Clifford Street, Piccadilly, Stonebow and Lord Mayor’s Walk, then resuming the normal route at Clarence Street.
The nearest alternative stops to St Leonards Place will be Station Road stops CD and CE (towards Acomb) and Rougier Street stop CF (towards Strensall and Haxby).
Bus 2 and 2A
These buses will have significant diversions inbound from Shipton Road, turning right on to Water End (stopping at Water End instead of Clifton Green inbound), then left on to Holgate Road, Blossom Street, Queen Street and Station Road, then resuming the normal route at Station Avenue. The buses will then take the normal outbound route back to the Park & Ride site.
All city centre passengers can continue to board at Station Avenue stop RM and Museum Street stop EA. Clifton Green inbound passengers can board at Water End.
Bus 6
University-bound buses will divert from Clarence Street left on to Lord Mayor’s Walk, then via Monkgate, Foss Bank, Stonebow, Coppergate, Low Ousegate and Rougier Street, turn at Lendal Gyratory, then resuming the normal route back via Stonebow to Campus East.
Clifton Moor-bound buses from Rougier Street will turn at Lendal Gyratory, then via Rougier Street, Low Ousegate, Clifford Street, Piccadilly, Stonebow and Lord Mayor’s Walk, then resuming the normal route at Clarence Street.
The nearest alternative stops to St Leonards Place will be the normal service 6 stops at Rougier Street stops CB and CF. Ensure you’re aware which direction your bus is heading as service 6 will be passing both stops in both directions.
Buses 30, 30X and 31X
These buses will divert via either Leeman Road or Holgate Road, depending on the vehicle type being used.
City centre passengers can board at Station Avenue stop RM or the temporary stop at 4 St Leonard’s Place.
Bus 80
This bus will divert via Holgate Road as per buses 2 and 2A above.
City centre passengers can board at Station Avenue stop RM or the temporary stop at 4 St Leonard’s Place.
Bus 19 and tour buses
These buses will continue to use their normal stops at Exhibition Square.
Park & Ride
We're expecting the roads within the city centre to be very busy. Where possible use the Park & Ride sites across outer York, including Monks Cross and Poppleton Bar. Askham Bar, Poppleton, Designer Outlet, Monks Cross and Grimston Bar do not use St Leonard’s Place and will be unaffected by the diversions. Find more information about the Park & Ride services and their timetables. Up to 3 children travel for free with a paying adult making the Park and Ride one of the most affordable ways to visit central York.
Travel by train
York railway station will be open as usual. Plan your journey by train.
Travel by car
We're expecting the city centre to be very busy so are advising people to choose walking, cycling and public transport travel options where possible.
From North - A19 and via Gillygate
Diversions will be in place with the lane closed to inbound traffic on St Leonard’s Place (from Bootham and Gillygate). For any drivers who need to traverse the city we recommend using the outer ring road where possible.
Blue Badge holders
Access to Blue Badge spaces will remain open but diversions are in place if coming from the North (including Bootham and Gillygate).
For those using Blake Street to access the city centre, or the Blue Badge holder parking bays on Duncombe Place, access will be available from Museum Street after travelling across Lendal Bridge.
Read more about Blue Badge parking in York.
Travel by taxi
Diversions are in place.
Information for nearby residents and businesses
We're updating residents and businesses in the area directly.
We're doing all we can to minimise disruption during these emergency works. Our team will be carrying out repair work between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm on most days and no work is planned to take place later than 8.00pm.
On the first day of the works we'll need to cut through concrete, which will be the noisiest part of the work. We'll do our best to keep noise down and will have dust suppression measures in place.
Thank you for your patience while we carry out these urgent repairs.
York Theatre Royal and surrounding businesses remain for open for business.
