Access points for Blue Badge holders
Changes to Blue Badge access on Blake Street, York
We are planning to:
- resurface Blake Street’s pavements and road
- make some minor changes to the top of Blake Street to allow vehicles to exit into Duncombe Place
Once completed, these works will not change Blue Badge access.
When will this work take place
The work will start on Monday 5 January 2026 and finish on Friday 6 March 2026.
What this means for you
From Monday 5 January 2026 to Monday 23 February 2026 we need to close the road each day from 7.30am to 5.00pm. Pedestrians and mobility aid users will still have access at all times. But vehicles, including Blue Badge holders, will not be able to access Blake Street, St Helen’s Square and Lendal between 7.30am and 5.00pm.
From Monday 23 February we will resurface the road itself. While we do this, we will close Blake Street to all vehicles for 24 hours a day for two weeks, until Friday 6 March 2026. Pedestrians and mobility aid users will still have access at all times.
Please note there will be no parking available at all on Blake Street from Monday 5 January 2026 to Friday 6 March 2026.
Pedestrians and mobility aid access will be kept open. Cyclists will be required to follow the diversion routes unless they prefer to dismount and use the footways.
Where you can park
There will be no parking available on Blake Street during the works. There are Blue Badge parking spaces on Duncombe Place and we have added to these over the Christmas Market period. We will keep this additional Blue Badge space in place while we work on Blake Street.
You can also still access the city via Goodramgate as usual.
Who is doing this work
The works will be carried out by CYC Highways department.
Other important information
Any vehicles left in Blake Street during the times of the road closure from Monday 5 January 2026 to Friday 6 March 2026 will be subject to a penalty charge notice (PCN) and vehicles may be towed.
Traffic must adhere to the safety and traffic management rules of the site. This is to ensure that adequate health and safety is maintained for both local residents and the contractors. Site staff will be on hand to advise and assist residents and businesses about any access restrictions once the works start.
Emergency services will always be given access in any situation.
Access to the city centre is restricted between 10.30am and 5.00pm by sliding bollards, which prevent hostile vehicles.
Blue Badge holders can drive into the city centre by presenting a valid Blue Badge to staff, who can open barriers at Goodramgate and Blake Street between 10.30am and 5.00pm, daily. Following checks, they will be let into the city centre and can park or, if driven, be dropped off.
Before 10.30am and after 5.00pm, residents and Blue Badge holders can continue to access the city centre and all the barriers will be open.
If you are a Blue Badge holder, you should display your Blue Badge on your dashboard for your whole journey in the city centre, from your arrival through the entry barrier up until when you exit.
