York's pedestrian zone is one of the largest in Europe; our 'footstreets' restrict vehile access to create a safer and more attractive city centre, and reduce inner city pollution.

While access for emergency vehicles is not restricted, other vehicles are not allowed within the pedestrian zone during footstreet hours (or 24 hours a day in some areas), and cycling is not permitted (unless stated otherwise).

Footstreet hours

Following government advice on Coronavirus (COVID-19): Safer Public Places – Urban Centres and Green Spaces we reviewed York's pedestrian area to ensure that residents and visitors can safely access footstreets during the economic recovery from coronavirus, as the city centre becomes busier.

While access for emergency (and other authorised vehicles, such as Dial a Ride) is always available, we've changed the times vehicles can access the city centre, in order to:

  • create additional space for pedestrians to adhere to social distancing guidelines
  • allow queues for businesses that need to manage the numbers of people within their premises
  • provide opportunities for businesses to be able to expand out in to the highway and public spaces

Currently, the pedestrian zone footstreet hours are between 10.30am and 8.00pm (5.00pm 'stay at home' coronavirus restrictions), 7 days a week.

We understood that increased pedestrianisation of parts of York affects some businesses, disabled people and residents living in the city centre; see details of Our Big Conversation relating to changes to Blue Badge access in the City Centre.
