Clean air zones

In 2020, York became the first and only city in the country to voluntarily introduce a clean air zone for buses, aimed at reducing exhaust emissions, as part of a bid to tackle pollution.

We have awarded more than £1.6 million in funding to 5 bus companies to help make their vehicles more environmentally friendly; more than 90 buses have been retrofitted' or replaced to ensure that every bus operating on or within York's inner ring road meets the 'Euro 6 emission standards' (vehicles that enter the zone fewer than 5 times a day are exempt).
