Brownfield Land Register

We maintain a register of previously developed 'brownfield' land in accordance with the Town and Country Planning (Brownfield Land Register) Regulations 2017.

York's Brownfield Register is current to 1 November 2023.

Get information on York's Brownfield Register in CSV format from York Open Data, or on our York Brownfield Register map.

Brownfield Land Register data is available on York Open Data from 2017 onwards.

The "Notes" section of the CSV file provides the reason for inclusion on the register. The planning history for sites identified with planning permission can be accessed through the planning application search portal by inserting the relevant planning application reference, which can be found in the notes section on the CSV file.

Background to the Brownfield Land Register

The purpose of the Brownfield Land Register is to provide information in a standardised way across all planning authorities in England.

The register includes previously developed land that:

  • has an area of at least 0.2 hectares or is capable of supporting at least 5 dwellings
  • is suitable for residential development
  • is available for residential development
  • is achievable for residential development

The register is provided in a format which is in accordance with these requirements and has to be updated annually.
