Smoother and safer journeys are coming on the A1079 with resurfacing work starting next week, Monday 7 September.
Project update - Monday 21 September
Works to the A1079 will require one further night-time closure to complete the lining. Buses will be allowed through, but the road will be closed to all other traffic between Common Road and Kexby from 8pm on Wednesday 23 September. It will reopen at 6.00am on Thursday 24 September. The road is currently open, and will be open until 8.00pm on Wednesday. We appreciate your patience while the works are taking place.
Around 3 miles of the A1079 Hull Road between York Road, Dunnington and City of York boundary at Kexby Bridge will be resurfaced as part of the council’s highway maintenance programme.
The works will be carried out by Lane Rentals Services on behalf of the council, who will be working for 14 nights under a road closure between the hours of 8.00pm to 6.00am. The road will reopen each morning, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
To enable the works to happen safely they will be completed in 3 phases:
Phase 1
Phase 1 works will be from the York Road, Dunnington junction up to the Common Road junction, starting on Monday 7 September 2026 at 8.00pm and working each night before completing by 6.00am Saturday 12 September.
The road will reopen each morning, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Phase 2
Phase 2 works are from the York Road, Dunnington junction to near Kexby Stray junction with the closure point at Dauby Lane to allow for turning traffic.
This will be done on the night of Saturday 12 September 2026 and will be finished by 6.00am on Sunday 13 September.
During this phase we will need to completely close the Common Road junction for this one night to enable it to be resurfaced safely. It will reopen at 6.00am on Sunday 13 September 2026.
Phase 3
Phase 3 works are from the Common Lane junction to City of York boundary at Kexby Bridge with the closure point at Long Lane to allow for turning traffic.
This phase is expected to last for 8 nights. This means the road will be closed between 8.00pm and 6.00am on Sunday 13 September 2026 and finish at 6.00am on Monday 21 September 2026.
The road will reopen each morning, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Having already completed projects from Bishopthorpe to Osbaldwick, City of York Council continues to deliver a programme of planned Highways Maintenance works alongside emergency repairs, like those recently completed on Lendal Bridge and the A1237 with record investment in York’s highways.

We continue to deliver our record programme of planned Highways Maintenance works for 2026/27 alongside emergency repairs. This stretch of the A1079 is the latest to receive significant repairs that will make journeys easier for people in the area and across the region.
“We are working to minimise disruption by carrying out these works on nights and working to reopen the road each morning. When the road is closed diversions are in place and we have sent letters to local residents and businesses to help them plan ahead. Once complete this will bring smoother and safer journeys for all who use this road and we’re grateful for everyone’s patience while we get this work done”
Information to help you plan ahead
During all 3 phases the road closure will be from York Road, Dunnington to City of York boundary at Kexby Bridge and there will be a signed diversion in place. This will use the A64, A19, A63, A614 to rejoin the A1079 at Shiptonthorpe. There is no suitable alternative diversion route for cyclists at night and no continuous footway to walk with a cycle so cyclists are advised to follow the vehicle diversion route. Motorists and cyclists may choose to take alternative routes, but due to the capacity the A1079 holds for large vehicles, the council must offer a diversion able to cope with the size and weight that the road usually carries.
Where there are footways, routes for pedestrians and mobility aid users will remain open to the public, to allow residents safe access to properties and homes. Businesses will also remain open.
Emergency services will be allowed through the works at all times.
Bus services will be escorted through the works. This means the X46 and X47 will be operating their usual timetable.
All street parking in the working area and within close proximity to the works will be suspended during the overnight closures. Any specific access requirements may be arranged by speaking to the site traffic management operatives, who will co-ordinate with residents’ and businesses’ requirements around the ongoing construction operations. Local residents and businesses can also email highway.maintenance@york.gov.uk with any queries.
Waste and recycling collections will take place as normal.
