Plan ahead for resurfacing works on Beckfield Lane

Published Wednesday, 12 August 2026

Page update for w/c 24 August: Over 1 kilometre of Beckfield Lane is being resurfaced from Monday 17 August, as part of the council’s highway maintenance programme.

Work will start on Beckfield Lane, from Wetherby Road to the junction of Lidgett Grove.

This builds on recent work to resurface footpaths, improve tactile crossings and drainage and install new bus shelters on Beckfield Lane.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, said:

Having already completed significant road resurfacing works at Bishopthorpe, Osbaldwick and Monks Cross, amongst many others across the city, we continue to deliver our record programme of planned Highways Maintenance works for 2026/27 alongside emergency repairs.

“We’re responsible for over 500 miles of roads across the city and maintaining them is crucial in helping everyone to get around the city efficiently. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while our contractors get this work done. Businesses in the area are very much open for business and we encourage residents to continue supporting them through this period”.

Road closures will be in place on Beckfield Lane between 8.00am and 5.00pm each weekday with the road reopening each evening, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Beckfield Lane will also be open each weekend and on the August Bank Holiday Monday (31 August). Access will always be maintained into Ostman Road, with temporary lights being used to facilitate this.

To minimise disruption, the work will be done in two phases:

Phase 1 of works on Beckfield Lane

Phase 1 includes Wetherby Road to Ostman Road starts on Monday 17 August. Access to Ostman Road will be from Boroughbridge Road end of Beckfield Lane.

Update: While we have made significant progress, we need more time than expected to resurface the road. This is because, once the surface was removed, our contractors identified unforeseen issues with some of the bottom layer of the road surface. Additional work is required before we can resurface these areas.

As a result, we now expect to finish phase 1 by 5pm on Friday 28 August. The arrangements will be the same as they have been throughout this phase of work with the road closing at 8am and reopening at 5pm and buses diverting from 9.30am.
