A work experience placement with City of York Council is an opportunity to find out more about our diverse job roles, and to consider whether a career with us is right for you.
Our aims are to:
- provide opportunities for young people to develop their skills and experiences of a working environment
- enable young people to make informed career choices and understand the types of jobs within the public sector
- give a real insight into who we are, how we work and the wide variety of opportunities we have to offer across our many different departments and services
Skills you'll gain from work experience
You will develop new skills, gain new knowledge and get some ‘hands-on’ practical experience.
It will allow you to build your confidence, develop your employability skills, such as:
- communication
- team working
- problem-solving
- customer service
A work placement is an excellent way to give you valuable experience to put on your CV.
The process of undertaking work experience
Your time with us will include a mix of work shadowing and practical experience. The activities you will be given will depend on the work of the team you will join.
We only have a limited number of places during 2026, and we cannot guarantee a work experience placement for everyone who applies.
York and York St John University students - please contact your Student Placement teams as we will be working closely with them regarding our summer internships programmes.
For students studying at other universities, unfortunately, we are not able to offer you placements due to our commitment with our local universities.
