Work experience

A work experience role with City of York Council is an opportunity to find out more about our diverse job roles, and to consider whether a career with us is right for you.

Our aims are to:

  • provide opportunities for young people to develop their skills and experiences of a working environment
  • enable young people to make informed career choices and understand the types of jobs within the public sector
  • give a real insight into who we are, how we work and the wide variety of opportunities we have to offer across our many different departments and services

Skills you'll gain from work experience

You will develop new skills, gain new knowledge and get some ‘hands-on’ practical experience.

It will allow you to build your confidence, develop your employability skills, such as:

  • communication
  • team working
  • problem solving
  • customer service
  • ICT

A work experience role will also give you meaningful experience to put on your CV.

The process of undertaking work experience

Your time with us will include a mix of work shadowing and practical experience. What activities you do will depend on the service area you're placed with.

Whilst we cannot guarantee a work experience placement for everyone who applies, we'll always do our best to support you.
