Museum Street roadworks

Plan ahead - Getting to York City Centre

On the nights of 23, 24 and 25 May we will be carrying out essential road maintenance works on Museum Street.

Work will take place each night from 8.00pm to 5.00am with the road reopening each morning, weather permitting.

We know that this road is well-used by buses, taxis and private vehicles so wanted to share some information for those who are moving around the city while the road is closed.

The works will mean St Leonard’s place will be closed to traffic from Bootham Bar with diversions in place. It also means Lendal Bridge will be closed to vehicles given there are no through routes.

Pedestrian access along St Leonard’s Place, Museum Street and Lendal Bridge will remain open.

Cyclists will need to follow the diversions in place, or, if they are able, dismount and walk their bike along the pavements.

For vehicles coming into the city centre along Bootham and from Station Road, diversions will be in place.

York Theatre Royal and its neighbouring businesses are open as usual. Pedestrian access is maintained and access for residents in the immediate area will be maintained.

While we are doing all we can to minimise disruption during these urgent works, we're expecting the inner ring road to be very busy so we're asking people to plan ahead and consider other ways to travel to the city centre.

Information for nearby residents and businesses

We are updating residents and businesses in the area directly.

We are doing all we can to minimise disruption during these urgent works. However, to minimise disruption to the road network these works need to be carried out at night. Work to repair the road will take place with shifts from 8.00pm until 5.00am the next morning. We expect this will take three nights (23, 24 and 25 May), weather permitting.

On the first day of the works, we will need to cut through concrete, which will be the noisiest part of the work. We will do our best to keep noise down and will have dust suppression measures in place.

On the following two nights we will be putting in the new road surface.

Thank you for your patience while we carry out these repairs. If you have any questions please let us know.

York Theatre Royal and surrounding establishments will remain open for business.
