Update on planned maintenance works to Lendal Bridge
The planned maintenance works to Lendal Bridge will no longer go ahead as originally scheduled.
In recent months, the Station Gateway project has experienced delays due to a number of unforeseen issues, including the need to reroute electrical supplies and fill in an underground Victorian water tank. These additional works have extended the project timeline and now overlap with the period when Lendal Bridge works were due to take place.
Pausing the Station Gateway project to allow the bridge works to proceed would result in significant additional costs and cause longer disruption for residents and businesses. Carrying out both projects at the same time would also place severe pressure on the city’s road network.
To minimise disruption across the city, the council regularly reviews all major roadworks and adjusts programmes where necessary. Recent updates to the Station Gateway timetable confirmed that both projects could not be delivered at the same time without major impacts.
As a result, the Lendal Bridge maintenance works have been rescheduled.
Ongoing safety and inspections
Lendal Bridge remains open and safe to use. While the repair works are postponed, enhanced inspections will be carried out over the coming months to monitor the condition of the bridge and ensure it remains safe.
Future works
The full programme of repairs will still be completed at a later date. Due to the nature of the works, including the installation of new waterproofing, the project must be carried out as a single coordinated scheme and cannot be delivered in stages without a full road closure.
A new timetable will be confirmed once it is possible to proceed without causing unacceptable disruption.
Supporting residents and businesses
We are grateful to residents and local businesses for their patience while plans for these works have been developed. All affected businesses and residents have been informed of the updated position and will be contacted again once a new date and practical arrangements, such as access and deliveries, are confirmed.
