Lendal Bridge - essential resurfacing
On the night of Wednesday 12 August we will be carrying out essential road resurfacing on Lendal Bridge.
To minimise disruption, the resurfacing will be done overnight with the bridge closed to vehicles from 8.00pm, reopening on Thursday morning at 6.00am.
The road will reopen to all traffic on Thursday morning, weather permitting.
We know that this road is well used by vehicles and cyclists, so we wanted to share some information for those who are moving around the city while the road is closed.
The pavements on Lendal Bridge will remain open on both sides of the road for pedestrian access, keeping access to businesses and properties open at all times.
Cyclists travelling towards the railway station from town will be diverted along Blake Street, Davygate, Parliament Street, High Ousegate, Low Ousegate, Bridge Street, Micklegate, George Hudson Street and Rougier Street. Travelling in the opposite direction, cyclists will be diverted along Rougier Street, George Hudson Street, Micklegate, Bridge Street, Low Ousegate, Spurriergate, Coney Street and Lendal.
For all other vehicles, the diversion will be along Station Road, Queen Street, Blossom Street, A59 Holgate Road, Poppleton Road, A1176 Water End Bridge, A19 Clifton and Bootham to the Gillygate junction.
St Leonard’s Place, Museum Street, and Blake Street will be available for local access only.
Lendal (the street linking Coney Street to Museum Street) will remain open. From 8pm to 6am on 12 August, the ‘no right turn’ at the Lendal exit will be suspended and drivers will be allowed to turn right. This means that Blue Badge holders can still use the Blake Street/Lendal loop, exiting via Lendal. Vehicles and cyclists using Lendal outside footstreet hours will also be able to turn right during the working hours.
The Theatre Royal and other neighbouring businesses are open as usual.
While we are doing all we can to minimise disruption during these urgent works, we’re expecting the inner ring road to be busier than normal overnight, so we’re asking people to plan ahead and consider other ways to travel to the city centre.
Pedestrian access
The pavements on Lendal Bridge will remain open on both sides of the road for pedestrian access, keeping access to businesses and properties open at all times.
Cyclist diversions

Travel by bus
Buses will continue to operate but some routes will be diverted after 8pm as a result of the road closure, so please plan ahead and allow extra time to travel. During the day, from 6am to 8pm, buses will operate as normal.
Diversions after 8.00pm on Wednesday 12 August
- Services 1 and 5/5A: will divert via Lord Mayor’s Walk, Stonebow and Rougier Street. Theatre Royal stops will not be served. Passengers can board at Rougier Street or Stonebow.
- Service 2A: will divert via Water End, Holgate Road, Blossom Street and Station Avenue. Stops between Museum Street and Clifton Green will not be served. Passengers heading to Rawcliffe Bar can board at Station Avenue RM.
- Service 6: will divert via Lord Mayor’s Walk, Stonebow and Rougier Street, turn at the gyratory, then return via Rougier Street and Stonebow to Layerthorpe. Theatre Royal stops will not be served.
- Service 30: the last trip of the day will divert as described for service 2A above. Passengers can board at Station Avenue RM. All other trips will remain on their normal route.
Park and Ride
A reminder that our six Park and Ride sites operate into the evening, with the last bus leaving town at 10.30pm.
You can use our Park and Ride sites across outer York, including Monks Cross and Poppleton Bar. Buses from Askham Bar, Poppleton Bar, Designer Outlet, Monks Cross and Grimston Bar do not use St Leonard’s Place, Museum Street or Lendal Bridge and will be unaffected by the diversions.

Travel by train
Trains will be operating as usual, so they are a great way to get into York city centre. If you are travelling to or from the station by vehicle, please plan ahead using the diversion information on this page. Pedestrians and mobility aid users going to and from the station will be able to use Lendal Bridge as normal.

Travel by car
Please choose active and sustainable travel options where possible, as we are expecting the rest of the inner ring road to be busier than normal overnight.
From the north: A19 via Gillygate
Use sustainable transport wherever possible, with Park and Ride serving York Station and the city centre. After 8pm on Wednesday night, there will be diversions in place as a result of these works.
Poppleton Bar and Monks Cross Park and Ride services will run along their normal routes. However, Rawcliffe Bar will be affected by the diversions after 8pm. This diversion will be the same as the diversion for car drivers.
Blue Badge holders
Lendal (the street linking Coney Street to Museum Street) will remain open. We plan to open Lendal Bridge on Thursday morning from 6am, so Blue Badge holders will be able to turn left and use the bridge as normal.

We are doing all we can to minimise disruption during these urgent works. However, these works need to be carried out at night to minimise disruption to the road network. Work to repair the road will take place on Wednesday 12 August from 8.00pm until 6.00am the next morning, weather permitting.
