From Monday 3 August 2026, we will be improving the junction of Bishopthorpe Road and Ebor Street. We expect the works to take 2 weeks to complete.
These works will include:
- renewing the outdated traffic signals with new ones
- improvements to drainage on Bishopthorpe Road and Ebor Street
- resurfacing Bishopthorpe Road from its junction with Darnborough Street to its junction with Bishopthorpe Road Car Park
The works are part of our Traffic Signal Asset Renewal (TSAR) Programme, which was approved in November 2015 and set out a plan to update many junctions across the city. We'll be installing new equipment at the junction which is cheaper to run and more reliable. The work will be carried out by our in-house contractor, with sub-contractors brought in for specialist works.
To help minimise disruption and complete the works as quickly as possible, work will typically be carried out between 9.00am and 7.00pm Monday to Friday, and between 9.00am and 5.00pm at weekends. In order to complete the required works safely, the southbound lane of Bishopthorpe Road will be closed 24/7 for the duration of these works. During the evenings of the 4th and 5th August, a full overnight road closure covering both directions will be in place between 8pm and 6am to allow installation of new ducting under the carriageway.
Ebor Street will be closed during work hours to allow for the drainage works to take place. Residents will be allowed access during these periods but will be requested to park elsewhere if possible. Waste collection is to be allowed and will be co-ordinated by CYC Highways.
The final stage of the works will be resurfacing of Bishopthopre Road from its junction with Darnborough Street to its junction with Bishopthorpe Road Car Park. These works will take place on Monday 24 August and Tuesday 25 August 2026, weather permitting. These resurfacing works will be carried out by Lane Rentals Services on behalf of the council, working night time between the hours of 8.00pm to 6.00am
To allow the resurfacing works to be undertaken safely it will be necessary for a road closure to be in place on weeknights only from Monday 24 August and Tuesday 25 August 2026. The diversion will be via Nunnery Lane, Blossom Street, and Scarcroft Road. The road will be reopened at the end of the working shift if it is safe to do so.

Impact on traffic and pedestrians
It’s likely that the work will cause significant disruption to traffic. We’re aiming to keep this to a minimum, however we encourage residents, businesses and visitors their journey and allow plenty of time. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route to avoid the junction, if possible.
Diversion for motor vehicles will be via Nunnery Lane, Blossom Street, and Scarcroft Road.
Diversion for cyclists will be via Darnborough Street, Cherry Street, and Vine Street.
Temporary crossing points will be available at all times during the works to ensure that all currently available pedestrian crossings are maintained. Traffic marshals will be on site between 7.00am and 7.00pm everyday to assist pedestrians crossing the road.
Pedestrian routes and access to all businesses and properties will be retained throughout the duration of the works. It will be necessary to temporarily close footways in the works area at certain times during the works and footway diversion routes will be put in place. If you have any issues, please speak to the staff on site so they can be resolved as soon as possible.
Impact on buses
Service 11, 15 and 21 will be diverted via Nunnery Lane, Blossom Street, and Scarcroft Road and the bus stop at Bishopthorpe Road shops will be suspended for the extents of the work. A temporary bus stop will be provided on Scarcroft Road outside St Clements Church and signage to make users aware of this temporary relocation of the stop will be installed on site.
