We provide school bus passes for eligible children and young people who need help travelling to and from school.
Depending on where you live and the school your child attends, eligible pupils may travel on either:
- a dedicated school bus service provided on behalf of City of York Council
- a local public bus service.
We'll let you know which travel arrangement applies to your child.
Eligibility for free home to school transport is assessed in line with our Home to School Transport Policy.

Dedicated school bus services
We provide dedicated school bus services for eligible pupils travelling from a number of areas within York to their catchment school.
Our current dedicated school bus services include:

Living in one of these areas does not automatically mean that your child will be eligible for free school transport. Eligibility depends on your child's individual circumstances and is assessed in accordance with our Home to School Transport Policy.
Using a dedicated school bus
Our dedicated school bus services are operated by our contracted bus provider.
If your child is eligible for a place on one of these services, we'll tell you how to obtain their bus pass.
For information about:
- school bus routes and timetables;
- new or replacement bus passes; or
- purchasing a concessionary place on a school bus;
contact York Pullman Bus Company.
A concessionary place is a paid-for place which may be available to a child who is not eligible for free home to school transport. Places are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
Travel on public bus services
For some schools, eligible pupils travel using the local public bus network rather than a dedicated school bus. We provide eligible pupils with the appropriate bus pass.

If your child is eligible for home to school transport and their journey is provided using public transport, we'll let you know what travel arrangements will be provided.

How we'll let you know if your child is eligible
When school places are allocated, we'll identify children who appear to be eligible for home to school transport based on their home address and allocated school.
We'll contact you with information about what you need to do next.
If you live in York and think your child may be eligible but you have not heard from us, you can contact the Children and Young People Transport Team.
Please include:
- your child's name;
- your child's date of birth;
- your home address; and
- the school your child has been allocated.
We'll assess your child's eligibility and let you know the outcome.
