In late 2025 we asked for your suggestions on how a new priority bus route through Rougier Street, George Hudson Street, and Micklegate would work.
We're providing this update for the residents of Bishophill on the Rougier Route proposals, and how we've revised those proposals following the public consultation.

Rougier Route proposals map
In late 2025, we held a public consultation on our ideas to bring bus priority measures to Rougier Street and George Hudson Street. We also included changes to the streets in Bishophill to help stop any potential rat-running in the future.
Hundreds of you took part and we are very grateful for your feedback, which we have used to update our proposals.
This map shows what you told us and how we've updated our proposals.

- We'll improve pavements to give pedestrian priority, and easier use for mobility aids on Micklegate.
- Eastbound cycle lane on Toft Green and Tanner Row to be segregated.
- Resident and business access to North Street and Tanner Row (east) could be controlled by ANPR camera.
- Residents told us not to put a physical barrier across Bishophill Senior and Fetter Lane. Now we propose making Fetter Lane residents only, using ANPR cameras, to prevent any future "rat-running".
- Residents said not to remove the existing bollards on Bishophill Senior, so we'll trial not removing these.
- The Skeldergate Bridge slip road will remain open to vehicles.
- Victoria Bar remains open for residents, with a proposal to control this with ANPR cameras.
- Existing bollards will remain in place on Skeldergate and at Lower Priory Street.
What the proposals mean for you and your access
Our new proposal removes the idea of new physical bollards to stop vehicle movements. Instead, our preferred proposal is that Victoria Bar and Fetter Lane would remain open to residents and local business owners, controlled by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
We will also trial leaving the existing bollards where they are.
These revised proposals show how we have listened and responded to your feedback.
Nothing has been approved or decided yet; we will take a final set of proposals to the Council’s Executive for approval in June.
The project itself is a trial which will run for 18 months, during which we can also make adjustments if necessary, especially to prevent rat-running.
We plan to start this trial in Winter 2026 to 2027 and will continue to provide updates.
