Almost 1,000 pairs of free slippers have been handed out at events for older residents in York, with more planned.
To help keep older people safer and independent at home by preventing slips and falls, Slipper Social events offer information, advice, a cuppa and a free pair of well-fitting slippers. So even more people can benefit from them, more sessions have been announced for this autumn and winter.
The events are run by the Council and Age UK York. Besides their shared aim to reduce the risk of falls, the Slipper Socials aim to connect people to local community venues and partners.
The partners offering information and support include Be Independent Telecare, the NHS - including occupational therapists and falls prevention experts - North Yorkshire Sport, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, and the Council’s Trading Standards team to raise awareness of and avoid scams.

We got a pair each last year and are ready for another. I wear mine in the house all the time. This is a very good scheme - especially if it stops people falling."
Alice said:
The quality is good and. I feel like Dorothy in my ruby slippers!"
Cllr Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said:
A well-fitting pair of slippers have been shown to reduce the risk of older people falling by 60%. This is a significant step towards keeping well and independent in your own home. Besides giving out good footwear at Slipper Socials, we and partners Age UK York are offering information and advice. This includes help to apply for Pension Credit – which includes the winter fuel payment - and where to find activities and support to help you live the life you want to lead.”
Simon Holmes from Age UK York, said:
Falls should not be an inevitable part of our aging. We’re encouraging people to find out more, including how some small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Regular exercise to maintain strength, balance and mobility, plus eating well and keeping hydrated can help reduce your risk of falling.
“We are excited about hosting more of the successful and free Slipper Social Events here across York and hope to see you there.”
