From 21 September, City of York Council will be working overnight to carry out resurfacing works on a section of the Outer Ring Road (the A1237), at the approach to the Haxby roundabout.
Overnight works will start on Monday 21 September 2026 at 8.00pm and are expected to take place for up to 5 nights, to be completed by 6.00am on the morning of Saturday 26 September, weather permitting.
Each morning the road will re-open at 6.00am unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The works will be carried out by Lane Rentals Services on behalf of the Council and are part of our Highways Maintenance programme.
To allow the works to be undertaken safely it will be necessary for the teams to operate under a night-time road closure. This means that between 8pm and 6am each night, the A1237 will be closed in both directions between the Wigginton Road roundabout and Strensall Road roundabout. The other connecting roads off Strensall and Wigginton roundabouts will be open for traffic to allow access to Strensall and Wigginton.
A signed diversion will be in place. This will use Malton Road, Heworth Green, Lord Mayors Walk, Gillygate, Bootham/ A19, and the A1237. Motorists and cyclists may choose to take alternative routes, but due to the capacity the A1237 holds for large vehicles, the council must offer a diversion able to cope with the size and weight that the road usually carries. Local diversions for New Earswick and Haxby road properties will be in place using Wigginton road in addition to the A1237 Diversion.
The off-road cycle route between Wiggington Road and Haxby Road will remain in use. A separate cycle diversion will be in place linking the off-road route with Haxby Road, Hawthorn Terrace, Link Road, Huntington Road and Strensall Road.
Letters have been sent to local residents and businesses, and diversion details for the Haxby project have been shared on networks used by deliveries and businesses at Clifton Moor, to help them plan ahead before work starts.

Haxby roundabout is the latest in a long list of works that have been completed this year, from pothole repair on residential side streets to resurfacing of major roads. We do know that these projects can be disruptive so in many cases, like this one, we are working overnight, reopening the road each morning, to reduce the impact on local residents and businesses
All drivers are reminded that traffic must adhere to the safety and traffic management rules of the site, to ensure the safety of local residents and the contractor. Emergency services will always be permitted through the works at all times. Site staff will be on hand to advise and assist residents and businesses about any access restrictions once the works are ongoing.
Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use the existing underpass. Bus services are not affected. Waste and recycling collections will be collected as normal.
Any street parking in the working area and within close proximity to the works will be suspended at these times, although any specific access requirements may be arranged by speaking to the site traffic management operatives, who will co-ordinate with residents’ and businesses’ requirements around the ongoing construction operations.
