“Plan ahead” message for Sunday road works along A59

Published Wednesday, 24 June 2026

City of York Council’s Highway Maintenance programme continues this summer with one-day road closures along the A59.

The works will take place on the A59 in both directions from the roundabout at the A1237 (York outer ring road) to the council’s boundary at the Moor Monkton turn. The work on the A59 will be followed on the same day by surface dressing works on Carr Lane.

The work for both stretches of road includes filling potholes and surface dressing. Work will run from 7am to 5pm on Sunday 28 June.

Signposted diversions will in place for motorists and cyclists on both routes.

On the A59:

  • Motorists will be diverted via the A168 and A19 through Dishforth and Thirsk. Motorists may choose to take alternative routes, but due to the capacity the A59 holds for large vehicles, the council must offer a diversion able to cope with the size and weight that the road usually carries.
  • Bus services 82, 83 and 84 are unaffected as the works are on Sundays, when these services do not run
  • Poppleton Park and Ride will remain open but visitors will need to access the site from the A1237, not the A59. Alternative Park and Ride sites, with buses running from 5.30am to 10.30pm, are:
    • Askham Bar which can be reached from the west via the A1 / A64
    • Rawcliffe Bar which just off the A19/A1236 junction
    • Monks Cross, via the A19 and A1237 (outer ring road)
  • Cyclists will be routed along Marston Lane to join the B1224 near Rufforth and then onto Beckfield Lane.

On Carr Lane:

  • Motorists will be diverted along York Road, Acomb Road and Poppleton Road.
  • Cyclists will be required to follow the cycle diversion routes along Lindsey Drive and Manor Drive South.

All on street parking in the working area and within close proximity to the works will be suspended at these times, although specific access requirements may be arranged by speaking to the site traffic management operatives.

Having already completed projects from Bishopthorpe to Osbaldwick, City of York Council continues to deliver a programme of planned Highways Maintenance works alongside emergency repairs, like those recently completed at the Askham Byran roundabout.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, said; “Across the whole of York we look after over 500 miles of roads, from tiny lanes to major routes like the A59. Maintaining all of these plays a crucial part in keeping everyone moving in the city, and as part of our planned highway maintenance programme, we’ll be carrying out important work on the A59 and on Carr Lane on Sunday 28 June.

“We are doing all that we can to minimise disruption, offering diversions, sharing this information early and sending letters to local residents to help you plan ahead. Our work to improve York’s roads means smoother journeys and we’re grateful for everyone’s patience while we get this work done”.

Where there are footways, pedestrian and mobility aid routes will remain open to the public, to allow residents safe access to properties and homes. Businesses will also remain open and emergency services will always be allowed through.
