There are a number of services that are available from us and our partners to help you in and around your home.

GoodGym York

GoodGym is a community of runners who combine getting fit with supporting older people and community projects.

They carry out practical tasks in the home or garden for people over 60 who can no longer do such tasks for themselves.

Examples of tasks carried out by GoodGym York include:

  • changing light bulbs
  • moving heavy items of furniture
  • assembling flat-pack furniture
  • lawn cutting and garden tidying

Any required tools must be available at the property.

Community Bees

Community Bees are a not for profit community interest company who offer a de-cluttering and gardening service across York.

They can help to de-clutter lofts, houses, garages and sheds.

They also carry out all gardening jobs including:

  • weeding
  • grass cutting
  • pruning
  • power hosing

They will consider all requests for help but particularly work with isolated and lonely residents.

All volunteers are DBS checked. They do not charge for the service but welcome contributions to help fund the service.

York Neighbours

York Neighbours can provide help with small one off tasks to anyone over 65 living in York.

This can include:

  • changing a light bulb
  • hanging curtains
  • clearing out a cupboard
  • some DIY

All volunteers are DBS checked. There is no charge for help but all service users must provide any materials needed.

You must register first to use this service, which involves a home visit:

YorWellbeing handyperson service

The YorWellbeing handyperson service allows you live independently and safely, by helping with simple repairs and tasks; get support with small jobs around your home if you're:

  • a resident in our area
  • aged 60 years and over
  • disabled

If you receive income based benefits the service is free of charge and you will only pay for materials.

If you're not receiving income based benefits there is an hourly charge for labour of £22.50 (including VAT) plus the cost of any materials. A minimum half hour labour charge applies.

YorWellbeing Falls Prevention Scheme

The YorWellbeing Falls Prevention Scheme offers free home safety visits to residents in Clifton, Guildhall, Micklegate and Fishergate Wards who want practical help and advice to reduce the risk of falls in their home.
