Legionella risk in closed buildings

There's a risk of Legionella (Legionnaire's Disease) developing in water systems that remain dormant. Business owners, landlords and property managers must be aware of this and put into place procedures to control the risk.

Hot and cold-water systems should be used at least once a week to reduce this risk. If you're in charge of an empty building, you may need to set up a flushing regime or consider draining the system.

See more information and advice from Public Health England.

For swimming pools, sports centers or spas, see the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group Code of Practice and their advice on temporary pool closures.

See information on the symptoms of Legionella (NHS).
