Under the Localism Act 2011, a town or parish has the ability to produce a neighbourhood plan, which can establish a strategic general planning policy for the development and use of land in the community.
Neighbourhood Planning Referendums are held when the Planning Inspectorate confirms that a draft Neighbourhood Development Plan, or Neighbourhood Development Order, is valid. For more information on neighbourhood plans and orders, see our planning webpages.
People who live in the neighbourhood and are registered to vote in local elections can vote in a referendum. This will follow a similar process to that for a local election.
Find out how to:
- vote in person (at your designated 'polling station' on polling day, during opening hours)
- vote by post (apply in advance 11 working days before the referendum)
- vote by proxy (apply in advance 6 working days before the referendum)
