The main custodial sentence given to children from York, aged 12 to 17 years old, is the Detention and Training Order (DTO), which ranges in length from 4 months to 2 years.
These sentences are only given to children:
- who pose a high level of risk
- who have a long history of offending
- where no other sentence will manage their risks effectively
The first half of the sentence is spent in custody and the second half is spent in the community under supervision of our Youth Justice Service.
The court can require that Intensive Supervision and Surveillance (ISS) is part of the community element of the DTO.
If a child does not comply with Youth Justice Service supervision in the community, they can be taken back to court and made to serve the rest of their Detention and Training Order in custody.
York Youth Justice Service maintain regular contact with children in custody as well as their families and the secure estate.
