A new walkway along the River Foss

My Castle Gateway consultation showed us that the River Foss is one of the area’s big opportunities to transform the way people arrive in and use the Castle Gateway.

A new walkway into the city along the riverside and through the Foss Basin could provide a pleasant, unbroken route into the city centre, and a place to relax and spend time.

  1. new pedestrian/cycle bridge across the lock and weir
  2. new pedestrian crossing over the gyratory
  3. new public access to the rear of the Castle Museum
  4. new pedestrian/cycle bridge across the Foss

RC1 – The Foss Basin site

The Foss Basin is hidden away and sees little activity, but the water could be the setting for urban living and new leisure opportunities.

RC1 Idea A - floating businesses and houseboats

More water-based activity could be attracted to the Foss Basin with a small investment in public spaces, and some limited leisure or cafe development to provide year-round activity. This could be ‘floating’ businesses like artists and crafts people alongside houseboats.

RC1 Idea B - new apartments and water activities

The Foss Basin is also a suitable setting for new apartments, built above the flood level. A residential community would bring more activity to the basin, contributing to the safety of visitors to the area. This development would be in addition to the increased water-based uses described above.

RC2 – Tower Gardens site

Many people have commented that the Tower Gardens could be better used. Here are some ideas.

RC2 Idea A - improved landscaping

We could explore how different landscaping would open up views to the river and create more places for people to meet, to have a picnic or to site and enjoy the views. We could explore how different landscaping would open up views to the river and create more places for people to meet, to have a picnic or to site and enjoy the views.

RC2 Idea B - new pavilion building

A new pavilion building could provide refreshments and staging for events, as well as facilities for river cruise passengers. The design would have to keep the pavilion above flood levels.

RC3 – Blue Bridge/Confluence of the Rivers site

The Castle Gateway should celebrate the River Ouse and Foss, and many people have commented that more needs to be done to enhance river environments across the Castle Gateway.

RC3 Idea A - public art

The confluence of the River Ouse and the River Foss could be commemorated with a viewing platform, attracting people to the southern most point of the Castle Gateway.

The river corridors were historically key trading routes and are still navigable rivers today, though the emphasis may now be more on following river corridors by foot and on a bike than in a boat. Key public realm and movement ideas include:

  • T10 - Relocating the river cruise pontoon and embarkation point to Tower gardens
  • T11 - Pedestrian bridges across the Foss
  • T12 - Enhanced and flood resilient landscaping for Tower Gardens, encouraging more social use
  • T13 - Bringing water based activity such as floating cafes, the arts barge and floating staging to the Foss Basin and the Ouse, opposite Tower Gardens
  • T14 - Relocating the war memorial from the Tower Street roundabout to a site within Tower Gardens
