Castle Gateway - Castle and the Eye of York ideas

Find out more about the ideas for the Castle and the Eye of York area:

C1 – The Castle Car Park site

The car park interrupts the setting and historic significance of the castle. It also stops people from moving through the site and enjoying the space. The site has not always been open space. In the past it has been the site of prison buildings and the prison Governor’s House.

C1 Idea A - event space and car parking

The car park could be remodelled to allow for events and public use on some days, and car parking the rest of the time. The temporary ‘pop up’ Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre that will take up part of the car park in June 2018 is an example of this approach.

C1 Idea B – public realm and event space

Turn the car park in to new public realm and event space that could host events throughout the year - as such, car parking would have to be replaced elsewhere, either through the underground car park (Idea D) or through a multi-storey at either St George's Field or Castle Mills.

C1 Idea C – new high quality building

The site has not always been open space. In the past it was the site of the Governor’s House. One proposal is to reintroduce a building that restores the set-piece of the Eye of York, created by Clifford’s Tower and the museum/court buildings. This could include uses that help to bring life and people into space, such as restaurants, conference or exhibition space, with apartments or hotel rooms above. This building could also act as an extension to the museum.

C1 Idea D – underground car park

An underground car park in this location would allow car parking with either Idea B or Idea C to be built above. An underground car park is likely to be very expensive, so would depend on funding being available.

C2 – The Castle Museum site

The York Museums Trust is exploring ideas to improve the visitor experience and facilities at the Castle Museum. These ideas will depend on Heritage Lottery Funding.

C2 Idea A - replace existing entrance hall

A new eye-catching entrance building that attracts people to the museum and better connects the museum buildings at upper levels.

C2 Idea B - a new entrance building facing onto Castle Car Park

A new entrance to the north of the Women’s Prison building, facing Clifford’s Tower would give great views from the upper levels.

C3 – Rear of Coppergate Shopping Centre site

The current appearance of the Coppergate Centre spoils the views of the castle area. The route between the castle and Coppergate is far from clear, with service yards and toilet blocks obscuring the way. A modest extension to the Coppergate centre could provide a better backdrop to the castle and also make the shopping centre easier to move around.

C3 Idea A - a new building on the rear of the Coppergate Shopping Centre

New shops or café uses at ground floor facing the castle would bring people and life into the public space and hide the service yard from view. A new entrance to the Coppergate Centre would clearly mark the route towards the city centre. At upper levels extended retail units – or new residential apartments - would have views out to the Eye of York.

  • T5 – Celebrating the Eye of York with a public realm scheme that treats the Eye of York as the entire setting of the historic castle and prison, not just a circular green in front of the museum
  • T6 – Changing Tower Street (including improvements to the ring road) to make it easier (and safer) to move between the Eye of York, Tower Garden’s and Saint George’s Field
  • T7 – Providing new walkways and bridges to help people enjoy the River Foss
  • T8 – Removing the disused Coppergate Centre service ramp
  • T9 – Working with artists to make sure the public space reflects the history and value of the area
  • T10 – Using lighting in creative ways to allow for flexible and year-round use of the spaces
