The City of York Council hold 2 apprenticeship recruitment events each year, one in February or March and the other in July or August. These events are for young people and their parents or carers to find out about apprenticeships and other training opportunities across the city. At these events, recruiting employers and training providers advertise their vacancies and other support services are on hand to provide information and advice.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic these events have been virtual and the council have held a number of Facebook digital events to promote post-16 options, apprenticeships and training opportunities in the local area, answer questions and book one to one guidance sessions. The York Apprenticeship Hub uses the hashtag #YorkApprenticeships on Facebook and Twitter to promote all events.
In addition there are a number of live learning events and webinars available:
- Amazing Apprenticeships - apprenticeship resources for schools, teachers, parents
- North Yorkshire LEP - Live Learn
Careers in the NHS:
- careers videos for schools
- information on the Trust Values (key for Healthcare Assistant applications) - The Values of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
For career pathways information, such as working up from a Band 2 Healthcare Assistant:

There are a number of upcoming events related to apprenticeships.
National Apprenticeship Week
It will take place from 7 to 13 February 2022. This event aims to provide information to future apprentices and link them to employers, giving the insights they need to make well-informed decisions. For more information see the National Apprenticeship Week website.
Year 11 Apprenticeship Taster Day
Every January, year 11 students get the chance to experience their next steps in sixth form, college or an apprenticeship. In response to student voice, an apprenticeship option was added in 2019 with 60 students and 12 employers across the city (including Network Rail, Nestlé, Aviva, JRHT, City of York Council and more), receiving positive feedback from the employers and students.
The Year 11 Apprenticeship Taster Day will be taking place on Thursday 13 January 2022.
For more information or support, or to request a registration form, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or talk to your head of year or careers advisor.
Registration forms must be returned no later than Monday 6 December.
There are a limited number of places per employer, so tasters will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
You'll be notified of your place by Friday 10 December to allow you to choose another option for the Thursday if your choices are full.
If you're also planning to go to the York College Year 11 Taster Day, please ensure that you book to attend their event on Tuesday 11 January.
The York Apprenticeship Hub (City of York Council) is working with local secondary schools, employers and training providers to help students in year 11 experience what it’s like to be an apprentice in York across a variety of job roles and sectors.
As an employer, if you can offer a practical taster session for students for either a full or half day please contact the York Apprenticeship Hub. The York Apprenticeship Hub manages the administrative process which includes placing students into their chosen taster and providing on-going communication and information to the students, schools and employers. For more information contact the York Apprenticeship Hub York.Apprenticeships@york.gov.uk or send us a message on our Facebook page.
