If you are concerned about your child's progress, you should discuss this with their class teacher, tutor or head teacher. If your child continues to have difficulties, the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) may decide to meet with an educational psychologist.
You will always be consulted about any involvement they have with your child.
The EPS's core functions are based around three areas of operation:
- work with schools (whole school level, staff, parents and individual pupils)
- early years work
- multi agency work
The EPS works provides a range of services to schools, families and young people within the city.
- training for professional staff, voluntary groups, parents and carers about the application of psychology in education
- consultation, advice and support to educational settings and families in order to reduce barriers to learning and promote inclusive practice
- individual assessments and guidance on evidence-based interventions relating to children and young people with special needs and disabilities
- monitoring and review of provision for children and young people (0 to 25 years) with Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) through the Annual Review process
- early years identification, assessment and intervention, including the provision of a Portage Home Visiting service to families
- direct intervention work with individuals or groups of children, which draws on psychology (e.g. cognitive therapies, solution focused work, anger management, Circle of Friends)
- advice to the Local Authority (LA) regarding needs and provision for children and young people to promote effective inclusion
- collaboration with the Virtual School and Children’s Services to promote the achievement and wellbeing of Looked after Children
- strategic work which contributes to the planning and policy work of the LA
- project work to improve teaching and learning, in particular, with vulnerable groups of young people
- advice and support to schools and families in response to critical incidents in the community
Educational Psychology assessments
We'll tailor our assessment to suit the specific needs of the child or young person following consultation with staff, parents/carers and the child or young person.
We usually see children and young people in their educational setting. We may carry out observation as well as direct assessment work. Assessment is usually carried out over time so that we can see how the child or young person responds to different ways of teaching and learning.
We'll then talk with parents, carers and staff and contribute to a My Support Plan if appropriate.
In most cases, we'll be involved in further planning and review meetings.
