More roads and pathways across York are set to be repaired, with an updated list of upcoming projects published.
The news comes after the council published an updated highways maintenance programme for the 2026/27 financial year, with more schemes added after York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority confirmed transport funding for the next four years at a recent meeting.
Communities across York will have already seen the significant amount of work taking place across the city and its villages as the result of this year’s record investment in highway maintenance. This has meant works in Stockton on the Forest, the A1079, A19, Haxby Road, Acomb, Elvington and much more. This is on top of a wide range of other works including street lighting repairs, drainage works and maintenance of York’s historic city walls.
Works which have been added to the programme include:
• Resurfacing of walkways in Wheldrake
• Improved pedestrian crossing safety works
• Road resurfacing works in Holgate, South Bank, Elvington and Osbaldwick
The council also took the opportunity to add funding into existing projects, meaning longer stretches of road were resurfaced, such as the recent works on the A19 south of Fulford and the A1079.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport said:
“It’s fantastic that more routes across the city are set for improvements.
"This has been made possible by the confirmation of funding at a recent Combined Authority Meeting, and we’re acting quickly to get these repairs planned in and completed as soon as possible.
“In recent months we’ve been working in all corners of the city and in between to improve journeys for residents. The programme also prioritises improvements to bus routes as well as walking, wheeling and cycling routes, supporting more people to use sustainable modes of travel.”
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:
“We’re investing record amounts to fix our roads and make them safer for everyone who uses them.
"This funding gives City of York Council the certainty to act quickly, plan for the future and fill more potholes across the city. We're fixing more roads and repairing footpaths, while investing in the improvements that will make journeys smoother and safer for everyone.”
The schemes which have been added to this year’s highways maintenance list have been selected based on need, supporting sustainable travel and how deliverable they are this year, as well as taking advantage of existing roadworks and road closures to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.
