A section of York’s A1237 will be resurfaced this week, with City of York Council working repairing the road between the A19 Shipton Road Roundabout and the entrance to Clifton Moor retail park.
Works will only take place overnight, from 8pm to 5am each day, on Thursday 29 October and Friday 30 October. The road will reopen each morning at 5am. Works will be finished with the road reopening to all traffic at 5am on Saturday 31 October, weather permitting. There will be no work at the weekend.
The resurfacing will be carried out by Lane Rental Services on behalf of the Council and is part of our wider Highways Maintenance Programme, which has seen a series of projects from small scale patching, city walls maintenance, drain clearing and streetlighting improvements, to major road resurfacing since the start of the financial year.
To allow the works to be undertaken safely it will be necessary for our teams to operate under a road closure, with a signed diversion in place. The diversion will use A19 Shipton Road/Bootham to A1036 Gillygate/ Lord Mayors Walk / Monkgate/ Heworth Green / Malton Road. Motorists and cyclists may choose to take alternative routes, but due to the capacity the A1237 holds for large vehicles, the council must offer a diversion able to cope with the size and weight that the road usually carries.
Traffic must adhere to the safety and traffic management rules of the site. This is to ensure that adequate health and safety is maintained for both local residents and the contractor.
The section of road affected can be seen on the map below:
A1237 East of A19 Roundabout Diversion
Road closures and diversions are marked as different coloured areas on the map.

Emergency services will always be permitted through the works at all times.
There are no residential properties within the works area and no pedestrian, mobility aid or cycle routes that allow access through the site. Cyclists or pedestrians wanting to travel in the direction of the closed section of the A1237 can use Manor Lane and a dual use path to Hurricane way to come out at Clifton Moor Gate.
Bus services will not be affected.
Residents and commuters are asked to plan ahead for these nighttime works, and we have written to residents in the immediate area. We’d also encourage residents to sign up for email alerts for roadworks and disruption in your area, which can be done via www.york.gov.uk/roadworks . First, you can create an account with One Network. Then sign in to select the location, type and frequency of one.network alerts you want to receive, and they’ll be emailed directly to you.
