Work to deliver new homes, job opportunities and public spaces at York Central is set to take another step forward.
At a meeting of the council’s Executive next week (6 October) members will consider the sale of parcels of land to York Central Limited and Network Rail, and whether to endorse the Mayoral Development Zone with the aim of maximising the potential of York Central and ensuring that residents and businesses across the city benefit from this major regeneration project.
Executive members will be asked to approve the sale of council-owned land at Fermetol Trading Estate to York Central Ltd and land at Upper St Paul's Terrace to Network Rail, subject to contract, independent valuation and legal due diligence.
If agreed, the sale of the Fermetol site will enable the delivery of new homes as part of York Central, with 100% of homes built on this plot designated as affordable housing.
If approved, the sale of land at Upper St Paul's Terrace will help deliver a new walking and cycling route into York Central from Wilton Rise, including foundations for the new bridge structure.
The meeting comes after plans to deliver over 1,000 new homes combined with new public spaces, a new commercial district, hotel, and a brand-new western station entrance were approved by the council’s planning committee earlier this month.

“York Central will be truly transformational for our city.
We’re committed to ensuring that all residents and businesses can feel the benefit of the major public and private sector investment going into the project. That means maximising the number of affordable homes and creating new well-paid job opportunities, new spaces for businesses to innovate and grow and new high-quality public spaces.
“Now that planning consent for the first phase of York Central has been granted we need to get on with delivering. These two reports seek to do exactly that, working with our partners to free up the land to help build new affordable homes, pedestrian and cycle access to York Central from Wilton Rise and also explore how a proposed Mayoral development zone could accelerate the delivery of York Central.”
Earlier this summer, the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire announced proposals for three Mayoral Development Zones, including York Central. The proposal included an initial £10 million regeneration fund designed to unlock further public and private investment and accelerate delivery. At the meeting next week, Executive members will be asked to endorse York Central's designation as a Development Zone.
