Everyone travelling near York Station will be able to use new dedicated cycle routes and pavements from next week as the York Station Gateway scheme takes another step forward.
From Monday morning (28 September) cyclists, pedestrians and mobility aid users will be able to use the new cycle lanes and pavements delivered as part of York Station Gateway scheme, which is transforming the area in front of York’s historic railway station. The removal of Queen Street Bridge has resulted in the opening up new public spaces, wider pavements for pedestrians, views of the city walls not seen since the 1870’s and much more.
The routes will be opening on Monday morning. This has been made possible now that final road markings are complete, street lighting has been installed, with signage installation being completed this week.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport said:
"This is a fantastic milestone for everyone who travels in and around York Station and a positive change for the city and everyone who uses the area.
"The new routes bring new and improved ways for people travelling to work, catching a train, visiting the city or simply travelling across the city.
"It has been great in recent weeks to see more and more people benefitting from the changes around the station with new public spaces, better views of the city walls and more places for people to stop and spend time.
“It’s great that we can now open these routes and help more people choose cycling for everyday journeys."
From Monday, the vast majority of the new cycle routes and pavements around the station will be open to use, with just one short section on the station side of the road due to be completed at a later date. This is due to the planned relocation of an existing substation, after which the continuous cycle lane can be completed.
Until then, cyclists travelling from Blossom Street to Station Rise will need to rejoin the road when travelling between the York RI building and the station portico to continue their journey. Those travelling to the station will have the option to access some of the station cycle parking near platform 2 and Lowther Terrace without rejoining Station Road.
All cycle routes on the city walls side will be fully open.
