York’s Walking Festival is back this September so why not come and join us?
Starting on Saturday 19 September and running through to Sunday 4 October, you’ll find a wide range of events to help you explore the city and countryside around us.
You might be keen on local history, nature, wildlife, archaeology or just exploring new places. This year's programme also includes a range of themed events, from the popular Bat Walk and Fungus Foray to heritage walks that uncover fascinating stories from York's past.
There's something for everyone, including routes accessible for people using mobility aids and buggies and for all experiences, there’s a chance to get outdoors and see York in a new way.
Richard Taylor, The History Man, one of the guides for the York Walking Festival, said:
“The York Walking Festival offers a wonderful opportunity to step outside and uncover the city's hidden stories and best-kept secrets.
"While many people know York for its Romans, Vikings and Saxons, my walks reveal a very different side of the city’s past, from lawbreakers to the dramatic siege of 1644. There’s also a wide range of walks exploring different parts of York and covering everything from history and heritage to people and places, there's something for everyone.
“So, if you enjoy great stories and surprising history, we'd love to see you there."
Cllr Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, said:
"York is a wonderfully walkable city.
"The York Walking Festival is about helping people discover just how enjoyable it can be to get outdoors, exploring the city and spending time with others. What’s more, walking is one of the simplest ways people can look after both their physical health and wellbeing.
"Whether you're a regular walker or looking for a reason to get out and about, there’s something for everyone. For residents wanting to live a more active lifestyle, who don’t know where to start, there’s support available for you – with advice, resources and training to help you get walking independently at any time of the year.
“We hope everyone will take advantage of the opportunity to find new favourite routes, enjoy York's parks and green spaces, and help York become a healthier and more environmentally friendly city.”
As well as being a great way to explore the city, walking can bring significant health benefits. NHS guidance highlights that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of major illnesses including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, while lowering the risk of early death by up to 30%. Walking can also help improve mood, sleep quality and overall wellbeing.
