Cyclists using central York’s cycle parking will see a number of improvements over September, with ten cycle parking locations being upgraded.
City of York Council will be removing existing stands which are in poor condition, as well as taking out several temporary bolt-down style cycle stands and replacing them with “Sheffield” cycle parking stands. In several areas we’ll be introducing more spacious cycle parking for cargo and inclusive cycles, in a programme funded by Active Travel England.
We have written to residents and businesses nearest the stands to let them know of the works, and will also be placing information on the stands themselves. Timing of the work has been staggered to keep as much cycle parking available as possible during the upgrades.

“It’s great to see city centre cycle parking having a much needed upgrade. Alongside the standard cycle parking the new spacious inclusive cycle parking will accommodate trikes, cargo and family cycles to name a few, enabling more people to choose to cycle.”
If you use one of the stands listed below, please make sure you’ve removed your cycle and lock before the work begins. Stands will be out of action and no cycles or locks can be left there while they’re being worked on, so please plan ahead and check where your nearest alternative is.
Some of the works will require road closure or changes to loading bays, in order for our crews and contractor to work safely. Details of these are listed below. The hours of work at each site will be 10.30 am to 5.00 pm.
The list of locations and dates the stands are being worked are, in order of their delivery:
- High Petergate (adjacent to the Dean Court Hotel): Monday 7 – Wednesday 9 September.
- Davygate (one set of cycle stands are adjacent to Mappin & Webb/Breitling Boutique: Monday 7 – Friday 11 September, the second set of cycle stands are adjacent to St Helens Church, Slaters & JD Sports: Tuesday 29 September – Friday 2 October).
- Parliament Street (sets of cycle stands on both sides of footway adjacent to Nationwide: Wednesday 30 September – Friday 2 October).
- Piccadilly (adjacent to Ladbrokes/German Donner Kebab): Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 September.
- St. Andrewgate (cycle stands running alongside the side of Café Nero): Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 September & Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 September; no work will take place on the weekend. Please note that St. Andrewgate will be subject to a road closure during the working hours, and will be opened again at the end of each working shift. This is for the safety of pedestrians, road users and contractors.
- Deangate (adjacent to the side entrance of the Cross Keys public house): Monday 14 – Thursday 17 September.
- Kings Staith (opposite the Lowther public house): Wednesday 9 – Friday 11 September.
- Cumberland Street (adjacent to the side of York Dungeon): Wednesday 23 – Friday 25 September.
- Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate (adjacent to the loading layby, ‘No. 1-4 News’ shop & ‘trio patisserie’): Monday 14 – Thursday 17 September. Please note that the loading bay will be suspended while the works are carried out from 14 – 17 September. This is for the safety of pedestrians, road users and contractors.
When completed, the project will provide spaces for cargo and inclusive cycles at: High Petergate, Davygate, Parliament Street, Piccadilly, St Andrewgate, Deangate, and Kings Staith.
Cyclists are advised that it is possible that the planned dates for some locations may need to be changed, due to logistical timescales or other unforeseen circumstances. If this is the case, we will place updated notices on the cycle stand itself, and letters will be delivered to residents and businesses in these areas to advise of any revised planned dates.
