The Ambassador of Ukraine, has written to City of York Council, requesting our support to mark Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day on Monday 24 August 2026.
Alongside work to develop closer ties between York and the city of Lviv, York will light the city walls in blue and yellow, the country's national colours on 24 August.
Ukraine’s 30th anniversary of its Independence Day back in 2021 was the last one to be celebrated in peacetime. Every one since has been marked amid war.
This year, as ever, York is steadfastly supporting residents from Ukraine, and our thoughts are with their families and friends back home.
Councillor Claire Douglas, Leader of City of York Council, said:
Ukraine’s independence is internationally recognised and enshrined in law, and our commitment to this continues resolutely.
“We continue to offer varied and extensive support, in particular to the people and city of Lviv, with whom we stand united in celebrating their culture, national identity and right to self-determination.
“The resilience and resolve of the Ukrainian people continues to inspire us, as they stand up for their liberty and independence.”
