This summer, we’re inviting you, your neighbourhood groups and local organisations to create new community events that celebrate our city, strengthen connections and make memories that last.
Your idea could help bring your street, park, or neighbourhood to life and we want to help you make it happen.
City partners, City of York Council and Make it York, have teamed up to work with communities to bring people together through shared experiences, promote inclusion and understanding, create a shared sense of identity and belonging and reducing social isolation.
A community event could include:
- Street parties and picnics
- Music, arts or craft sessions
- Sports days or family games
- Nature walks or gardening days
- Cultural celebrations
- Book swaps, repair cafés or skill‑sharing workshops
And we can help and guide you with:
- Event planning and safety Insurance requirements
- How to promote your event
- Toolkits for running inclusive, accessible events
- Access to funding to support your event planning
Partners have created an easy, online toolkit to guide residents through the event planning process.
Councillor Peter Kilbane, City of York Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Culture, said: “This summer we’re making it easier for people to get together in their communities, have fun, get to know each other better and create shared memories. There are already some fantastic annual events across the city and we’re keen to see more communities create new ones.
“We’ve made some funding available plus an easy online toolkit so that residents can get their events up and running. Whether you’d like to create a street party, a sports day or any event that brings your community together, get in touch and we’ll help you do the rest.
“You don’t need any prior experience, just do it!”
Lisa Grimbley, Head of Markets and Events, from Make It York, said: “Events are a wonderful way to bring people together. Supporting local people to deliver community events in local environments enhances a sense of pride for where you live, build relationships with neighbours and overall celebrate community in our wonderful city.
“We look forward to working with local organisers to deliver great events throughout the summer months."
