Contractors John Sisk & Son have confirmed the programme for their final works on the highways part of the York Station Gateway project.
Once they are finished the new permanent road layout at York Station Gateway will be in place along with continuous safe cycle lanes and footways, plus the new bus stops and fresh new public space for people to enjoy. It will also bring an end to the highways works (package 2) of the project.
Work led by Network Rail continues on the Multi-Storey car park (package 5) and LNER are progressing plans for improvements within the Station and to the Portico (package 3). Package 4 is the formation of a new ‘loop road’, including further bus stops and a bus turning loop, which will significantly reduce bus journey times. These works will take place after package 2 is completed.
The programme for package 2 includes 4 sets of night time road closures. Below is a brief summary.
Full details for each phase of the carriageway works, including diversions and transport information will be published soon but pedestrian access to the Station is being maintained from both the Blossom Street and the Leeman Road approaches to Station Road at all times.
The works include night time road closures from 8.00pm to 6.00am on:
- Monday 1 June, Tuesday 2 June and Wednesday 3 June and Thursday 4 June with the works finished by 6.00am on Friday 5 June
- Monday 8 June, Tuesday 9 June and Wednesday 10 June, Thursday 11 June and the works finished by 6.00am on Friday 12 June
- Monday 15 June, Tuesday 16 June and Wednesday 17 June, Thursday 18 June with the works finished by 6.00am on Friday 19 June
- Monday 22 June, Tuesday 23 June, Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June with works completing by 6.00am on Friday 26 June
The road will reopen to vehicles each day from 6.00am to 8.00pm during the periods the night time closures are in place.
Upcoming works
Nightworks will be taking place on weekday nights commencing 18 May to construct new cycleways and a new pedestrian island on Queen Street. Between 7.30pm and 5.30am traffic lights will be in place while the works take place.
From 8.00pm on Tuesday 26 May until 6.00am on Thursday 28 May temporary traffic lights will be in place near the left luggage building (Ex Autohorn) to ensure work in that area can safely go ahead. This will include working in the carriageway during the day on Wednesday 27 May when the road is open to vehicles but the temporary lights will lead to delays.
Section 1 (1 to 6 June)
Night time closures 1 to 5 June and work in Tea Room Square 5 and 6 June
This will involve nighttime works with a closure from the entrance to the Milner Hotel to just beyond the current entrance to the Portico, also affecting vehicular access to the Portico and Tea Room Square. The works will take place each night from Monday 1 June until 6.00am on Friday 5 June. The road, including access to Tea Room square is expected to reopen each morning. Alternative arrangements for Blue Badge Holders and taxis, as well as access to the Milner Hotel car park are being put in place and will be announced shortly.
Following this, work to install the Hardicrete (hard-wearing bonding material used on bus stops), work will take place around Tea Room Square on 5 June and 6 June. Due to the time it takes for this to cure access to Tea Room Square will be restricted on these days. Access to the Portico and short stay car park on these dates will be enabled for Blue Badge holders only with further details to be confirmed.
The works taking place will see the final areas around the Milner Hotel paved, and Hardicrete installed to preserve the life of the bus stops in this area. This need to be installed around the same time as the final road surface to ensure its longevity.
Section 2 (8 to 12 June)
Work will be taking place from the South Train Shed to near the Station Portico. This will require night time closures in this area (Orange section above) with the road closing at 8.00pm each night from Monday 8 June until works finish by 6.00am on Friday 12 June. The road will reopen by 6am each morning. When the night time closures are in force, access to the Station Portico and Tea Room Square for vehicles is expected to be possible from the Leeman Road side with arrangements being confirmed shortly.
During this period the road will be resurfaced in this area.
Section 3 (15 to 19 June)
This will see work taking place from the South Train Shed to the junction with Blossom Street. It will require night time closures in this area (Yellow section above) with the road closing at 8.00pm each night from Monday 15 June until work is completed by 6.00am on Friday 19 June. The road will reopen each morning at 6am. When the night time closures are in force, access to the Station Portico and Tea Room square for vehicles is expected to be possible from the Leeman Road side.
This will allow the resurfacing of the final section of road and to link the cycle lanes into the final road layout.
Further works
Night time closures 22 June to the morning of 26 June, and bus stop works 3 to 5 July
Further night time works are planned to tidy up and finish off some areas. This will be done through night time closures from 8.00pm on Monday 22 June, finishing at 6.00am on Friday 26 June, with the road reopening each morning. More details about what this will entail will be shared in the coming weeks.
On the weekend of 3 to 5 July work to lay the Hardicrete (in section 2) to prolong the life of the surface of the bus stops will take place. This will mean that the bus stops will be out of use from 8.00pm Friday 3 July until 6.00am Monday 6 July. Temporary traffic lights will be in place while this happens. Bus diversions will also be in place and a shuttle bus will be in operation to support people travelling in the area to their bus route with more details to follow.
More details about each of the phases of work, including transport information, will be published in advance of the work starting.
Residents and stakeholders in the area have been informed, and work is underway to minimise disruption as much as possible.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport said:
“Since the removal of Queen Street Bridge the area has been completely transformed.
"Once these final stages of the highways works have finished there will be fantastic open spaces for everyone to enjoy, safe walking and cycling routes and an improved road layout.
“This is on top of the benefits people have already seen, with the new bus stops, wider pavements and incredible views of the city walls not seen since the 1860’s.
“Thank you to everyone for your patience as work has taken place on this hugely complex project. As we have before we will be sharing detailed transport information to help people to plan ahead as both the station and city centre are very much open for business but wanted to make people aware as soon as we could of the upcoming works.”
