The list of candidates standing for the Heworth by-election has been published.
Here are details of who is standing
The election will take place on Thursday 15 January 2026 with polling hours between 7am and 10pm. The count will take place at the close of poll at The Centre @ Burnholme.
Holy Trinity Church Hall will not be used as a polling station in this election. Voters who usually go there must use The Centre @ Burnholme instead.
Residents who are not currently registered to vote are encouraged to register to vote online or telephone: 01904 551007. All applications must be made by midnight on Monday 29 December 2025.
Eligible ward electors can vote in one of three ways:
- in person, at your polling station: you are required to take photographic identification - see below for more information
- by post: completed applications for a postal vote must be received by the registration officer by 5pm on Tuesday 30 December. You can apply online for a postal vote or download an application form to vote by post
- by proxy (someone votes on your behalf): completed applications for a proxy vote must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 30 December. You can apply online for a proxy vote download a form to apply for a proxy vote or telephone: 01904 551007. Emergency proxy applications can be made in certain, specific circumstances at West Offices, Station Rise, up until 5pm on Thursday 15 January.

If you do not have an accepted form of photo ID, you no longer look like the photo on your ID or the name on your photo ID is different to your name on the electoral register, you can apply for a free voter authority certificate. Applications must be received by 5pm on Wednesday 7 January 2026.
