Coppergate road closure from Monday 6 October to Thursday 9 October

Published Thursday, 2 October 2025

City of York Council has written to businesses and residents along Coppergate to advise them of tarmac repair works in the road outside 8 Coppergate (Coppergate Clinic) in early October.

The work follows requests from local businesses and a series of recent visits to traders along Coppergate to discuss the issues. All businesses will be open as usual during the works and pedestrian access to the Coppergate Centre is not affected.

The work will start at 9am on Monday 6 October and the road will be closed until works finish (weather permitting) by 4pm on Thursday 9 October.

While on site, CYC will also make a section of the pavement safe by lifting the kerbs and making the pathway level with tarmac, before being replaced with flagstones in the future.

To allow the work to be undertaken safely it will be necessary to close Coppergate to all motor vehicle and cycle traffic for all four days. This will have an impact on local bus services and cyclists using Coppergate.

Pedestrian and mobility aid access will be maintained throughout, and the works do not affect pedestrian access to the Coppergate Centre.

A map of the dedicated diversion for cyclists can found on the Coppergate repairs page and signs have also been placed at key points to give advance notice of the temporary changes. A diversion for vehicles is also in place and signed on site, as well as on the online map.

A number of bus routes in York use Coppergate as part of their route and will need to be diverted as a result of the temporary road closure.

Bus stop changes have been made available on the Coppergate repairs page and will be displayed on posters at the Piccadilly stops.

Site staff will be on hand to advise and assist residents and businesses about any access restrictions once the works are ongoing. Businesses have been advised of delivery access which will be accommodated where possible during the works, from the Piccadilly side of Coppergate.

All on street parking in the working area and within proximity to the works will be suspended at these times, although any specific access requirements may be arranged by speaking to the site traffic management operatives, who will co-ordinate with residents’ and businesses’ requirements around the ongoing construction operations.

Emergency services will always be always permitted through the works.

Delays are expected, so please plan ahead and use public transport, walking and cycling where possible. To help with this, you can sign up for email alerts via Roadworks page. First create an account with One Network. Once signed in, you can select the location, type, and frequency of One Network alerts you wish to receive.

Notes to Editors:

Outside of these works, Coppergate is a bus lane and private vehicle access is restricted between 8am and 6pm every day.
