A £3.23 million refurbishment of 32 homes at an independent living community in Heworth is finished, and eligible people with extra care needs are invited to apply.

After adding 27 extra homes to Glen Lodge in 2018, the 32 original apartments have now been made more energy-efficient, accessible and comfortable.

Designed to offer a home that’s comfortable, safe and friendly with the required level of care, the one-bedroomed apartments are for people aged 60 and over who need higher levels of care.

The refurbishment aims to support residents' independence and includes:

  • installing a new heating system that will reduce heating bills and lower carbon emissions
  • increasing levels of insulation for more constant temperatures in all seasons
  • fitting new, double-glazed windows
  • rewiring and replumbing
  • replacing all kitchens and bathrooms with accessible fittings
  • enhancing lighting in the kitchens
  • improving access to the scheme’s gardens with extra external doors and added patios.

Cllr Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said:

“At Glen Lodge, residents can live independently with their own front door in a secure environment.

"We offer a higher level of support 24/7 to meet individuals’ routine needs, as their care needs change over time and in case of emergency.”

Cllr Michael Pavlovic, Executive Member for Housing, said:

“Each self-contained apartment is designed to suit the needs of people needing extra support, with a lounge, a bedroom and some have bathrooms with level access showers.

"A number of the homes are also designed to support people living with dementia. This refurbishment gives all residents at Glen Lodge high standards of accommodation and we’re welcoming applications from eligible people to move here.”

Tom Frank, a resident of Glen Lodge for the past two years said:

“My family said to move here, they’d come and visit, and that I’d be happy, and I am.

"It’s nice, comfortable and everybody’s sociable. I have friends here now and I’ve got help if I need it. You can’t go wrong here.”

Applicants for Glen Lodge must be eligible for Council housing or need specialist accommodation.
