How to apply for a child work permit

Planned maintenance

We're making essential system updates on Wednesday 13 December between 7:30pm and 8:00pm - during this time some online services may be unavailable. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Prospective employers are responsible for applying for a permit by completing a Child Employment Application Form.  There is no charge for a child work permit and we aim to issue permits within 10 working days.

Parts of the form must be completed by:

  • the employer, to confirm they will abide by the law regarding the child's employment and that they have the appropriate insurance cover
  • the child's parent/carer giving consent
  • the head teacher at the child's school that the employment will not negatively affect the child's education

Risk Assessment must be carried out by the employer.

Work permits will be issued direct to the child.  Employers will be notified separately.  Work permits will have a date of expiry, and are not valid after this date.  Employers must reapply for a replacement.
