Salt bin winter preparations
We're planning to have checked all salt bins we're responsible for by the end of November, to ensure that they are refilled and repaired where required, and ready for winter.
In addition to the 360 miles of routes we grit in winter, we provide salt bins at key points to encourage 'self help' when roads are icy.
Note: Salt, or 'grit', in these bins is also for use on footpaths.
Report salt bin problems
We inspect and refill the salt bins we're responsible for between November and April.
Report a salt bin problem, such as:
- litter inside salt bins
- empty salt bins
- broken or damaged salt bins
Find out how to make other salt bin enquiries.
Our responsibility for salt bins
We’re not responsible for all salt bins across York.
We may be able to fix reported problems if a salt bin is owned by:
- a parish council
- housing association
- private organisation
- an individual
Request a new salt bin
Contact your ward Community Involvement Officer to:
- request a new salt bin
- move an existing salt bin
- tell us a salt bin is missing
Map of salt bin locations
Search the map by postcode or street name to find nearby salt bins (shown as red icons; routes we grit in winter are shown on the map as blue lines).
Salt bins not included on the map aren't our responsibility; we're sorry we're unable to help - you'll need to contact the owner directly.
