The Armed Forces Covenant was created in 2011 by:
- representatives from the Armed Forces community
- representatives from the wider community
- the government
It is an agreement that no one who has ever served in the Armed Forces, or their families, should be disadvantaged because of their service.
In practice, this does not mean that Armed Forces personnel receive preferential treatment compared to other people, but that everyone agrees to work together to ensure that the Armed Forces community can access the same level of service as non-serving citizens.

York’s Pledge in Action
We, on behalf of all of York, signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2011. Since then, the people of York have worked to make real changes across the city for the benefit of the Armed Forces community.
Some examples of this work are:
- we, supported by the Ministry of Defence, formed a dedicated Armed Forces Covenant Team in May 2017
- The Royal British Legion offer advice and guidance drop-in sessions at West Offices from 10.00am-1.00pm on the first Wednesday of every month
